Does the Doctoral Programme in Educational Psychology (DEdPsych) Training course within the School of Psychology at Southampton University promote an apparently exclusive “gender affirmative” approach taken with regard to teaching and supervising gender ideology related issues to trainee Educational Psychologists on their DEdPsy course, which includes research projects and school-based placements?
If so such an approach would be in conflict with all recent government advice, guidance and legislation in dealing with ‘gender-questioning children’ in compulsory educational settings, so at the very least there is an issue of balancing such content with opposing ‘gender-critical’ views and beliefs, which I hold. In particular the “gender affirmative” approach substantially challenges many of the findings of the Cass Review (2024), the Sullivan Report (2025) and rejects the recent ruling (April 2025) by the UK Supreme Court in the case of For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish Ministers that the words “woman” and “sex”, within the Equality Act 2010, have biological definitions.
More specifically the promotion of ‘gender-affirmative’ views includes the ‘social transitioning’ method of treating ‘gender-questioning children’ in schools e.g. the use of preferred pronouns, toilets and single-sex sports teams. However, such programmes are now broadly regarded as "not neutral", in any setting, after this formed part of the conclusion of the Cass Review (2024).
Under the Statutory guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe In Education’ (KCSIE) all children’s services professionals are obliged to share any safeguarding concern with lead KCSIE staff. Some (currently a small minority) of UK Educational Psychologists have raised criticism of the promotion of ‘social transitioning’ in compulsory educational settings following KCSIE guidelines because they consider such promotion as a Safeguarding and Child Protection concern.
Other views in the EP profession are available e.g. The series of +50 videos “CLASSROOM Psychology” freely available on YouTube, which promotes ‘gender-affirming care’, the use of puberty blockers, hormone therapy and ‘social transitioning’ for gender-questioning individuals, including children attending compulsory education, if the series title has any veracity (e.g. CLASSROOM Psychology no: 38 esp. 31:00 mins. onwards).
THESE THEMES ARE REMINISCENT OF THE WORKING PRINCIPLES DEPLOYED AT THE NOW DISCREDITED AND PROROGUED TAVISTOCK GENDER IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT SERVICE (GIDS) CLINIC.
